We Are This City, [email protected] Apartments and Cloud Face are collaborating to do a community art project and mural. This is an unprecedented opportunity for community members to have a stake in a permanent mural in Uptown by participating in the creation. Kids of all ages are invited to come throw balloons of paint and spray fire extinguishers filled with paint at a 60×20 foot wall which will be a backdrop for a mural that local artist Cloud Face will paint after the community has their fun.
The community project is open to anyone who would like to participate in the creation. This project allows our community to not only develop a sense of pride in place but also gives people the opportunity to engage with others in our community in a fun and productive way.
The community is encouraged to put on their painting clothes on and come down for this unique event. Not only will people have a chance to get messy with paint but We Are This City will be facilitating fun/participative activities throughout the day with community members, encouraging people to engage with each other.
The community project and mural will be facilitated by We Are This City, the leading community arts organization in Albuquerque. We Are This City partners with over 150 local artists to bring fun and engaging projects to our local environment as well as works with businesses to creatively make art and show art at a local level. This project draws on the importance of bringing people together to participate and engage in the creation of large scale art projects. This allows for the people of our community to have a sense of pride and ownership in the art that is being created here in our beautiful city.
“We Are This City is excited to collaborate with [email protected] Apartments and Cloud Face on a project that brings our local community together and gives everyone a chance to have fun and do something highly impactful and creative,” said Max Baptiste, Executive Director of We Are This City. “Working with local businesses and artists to do high impact projects like Let’s Paint Uptown reinforces using art as a way to engage our community to share in our cultural heritage on a local level.”
“We are thrilled to be working with We Are This City and Cloud Face to do such a creative and community oriented project such as Let’s Paint Uptown,” said Monick Halm, owner of [email protected] Apartments. “It is important that we continue to engage the community in new ways while promoting our local artists and our community.”
“Working with We Are This City is always fun for me, it allows me to take part in projects that I don’t always get a chance to do and it gives me the opportunity to be a part of my community in a much more intimate way,” explains the artist Cloud Face. “If you have never done a We Are This City project, I highly recommend you come out for this event, they are truly unique experiences.”
Project Date: June 3rd from 3pm-5:30pm
Project Location: [email protected], 5801 Haines Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110

In September 2015, We Are This City hosted two community-driven events titled “ABQ BALLOON BLAST,” in which more than 70 youth and families participated. We invited community members to throw balloons filled with paint at a designated wall and 10 MDF panels in this celebratory exchange and art making event. The panels were then cut into 2×2’ sections and distributed, by invitation, to 75 local artists to add their creative flair.
The completed works were first exhibited in We Are This City’s pop-up show in Nob Hill, Albuquerque which 1,000+ people attended over two evenings in December 2015. They are currently being displayed in a Downtown Albuquerque gallery, where the art has been seen by an additional 2,500+ locals during private receptions.
We Are This City will be exhibiting these pieces at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, CA on October 22nd from 7pm-2am. In this show, we will present 75 artworks by 75 champion artists from Albuquerque and the Albuquerque diaspora.
There will be music and drinks at the opening, too! It’s a party y’all!
Wake Self will be performing live and GALAXY will be on the 1’s and 2’s bringing the good vibes!

Unstructured Merriment • 25th Anniversary Exhibition and Fundraiser
September 30–November 23
Gallery Celebration: Saturday, October 15, 6–9 pm
In celebration of our 25th anniversary, Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Unstructured Merriment, a group show that highlights the gallery’s distinctive history. In the1970s Richard Levy moved to Albuquerque and studied the history of photography with Beaumont Newhall at the University of New Mexico. An avid collector and purveyor, Levy had an antique store in Nob Hill that sold old photographs, vintage postcards, and silkscreen posters, among other things. In 1991 he opened the gallery at 514 Central Avenue SW and co-founded 21 Steps Editions, which produced waterless lithographs by leading contemporary artists. Showing work by local, national, and international artists, Richard Levy has created one of the top contemporary galleries in New Mexico.
With a wide variety of mediums, Unstructured Merriment includes works by Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Jeff Kellar, Sol LeWitt and Sachiko Cho, and Albuquerque artists Thomas Barrow, Beau Carey, Jenna Kuiper, Leigh Anne Langwell, Earl McBride, Emi Ozawa, Mary Tsiongas, and Tom Waldron. Ephemera that Levy has collected throughout the years will be on display, as well as his handmade hooked rug of the Albuquerque Isotopes baseball stadium.
As a silver anniversary gift to our friends and community, we are hosting a 25th anniversary celebration and fundraiser to benefit We Are This City (WATC), an organization that supports local artists and Albuquerque community art projects. Funds are being raised by raffle ticket sales. Raffle items include selected 21 Steps editions, works by gallery artists, WATC publications, and more. Preview artworks and preorder raffle tickets on the WATC website (http://wearethiscity.com/product/rlg/). The anniversary party features a pop-up event with an interactive projection installation, music by DJ Dave12, and an opportunity to participate in a WATC-sponsored community art project. Further information about this organization can be found on their website at wearethiscity.com.
